September 2014 Events in Arizona

September is full of fun events around the state.  We highlighted some of our favorites that we think you might enjoy as well!  Happy September.

Hot SeptEMBER nights in Downtown Mesa.  Friday September 5th - 6:00-10:00 PM. Firefighters, firetrucks, demonstrations, food, bagpipes and more.

September 6th, 2014: Brazilian Day. This Brazilian cultural festival is held at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts from noon - 6:00 PM. Activities include live music, cultural dancing, capoeira, food, drinks, and more.

September 9th, 2014:  Grandparent's Day.  Celebrate a few days early on Sunday, September 7th with free admission for grandparents and their grandchildren to the Children's Museum of Phoenix.

Saturday, September 13th:  Rockin' Taco Street Fest.  Enjoy salsa competition, live entertainment, street taco station, margarita hut, beach games and more.  Admission is $5.  Children under 12 are free.  Go here for more information.

Ballet Under the Stars - starting September 18th - September 27th at various locations around the state.   We've been telling readers about this event since way back in the day when I Heart Mesa was just getting started about 6 years ago.  Each year, Ballet Arizona puts on FREE outdoor performances. It is such a neat treat for young and old.  All performances begin at 7:00 PM, but make sure to arrive plenty early with your lawn chairs and picnic blankets as it does get crowded.  We've attended the performance at Fountain Hills before and enjoyed a picnic at the park before the show.  Click here to see dates and locations near you.

Constitution Week:  September 17th- 24th.  Many events in Gilbert all week long to celebrate our beloved constitution.  A Constitution Fair will be on Saturday, September 20th, from 6:00 PM to 9:30 PM and includes displays, shows, fireworks and a concert by Lee Greenwood and the Millennial Choir (please say you have his song stuck in your head now).  Lots of fun ways to celebrate all week long.  Make sure to check out the website.

September 19th - 21st:  Prescott Powwow  Learn about and enjoy a celebration of our rich Native American history.  Enjoy dancing, food and craft vendors.  Public is encouraged to attend.  Click here to read about proper etiquette at a powwow.

September 19th:  Talk Like a Pirate Day.  Last year we headed down to Krispy Kreme for lots of free donuts.  Of course we had to dress like a pirate!  Nothing is announced yet for 2014, but check their press release page for updates on how they plan to celebrate this month.

September 19th- 28th:  Restaurant Week.  Branch out of your usual and try something new.  Click here for participating restaurants and menus.

September 26th is John Chapman, aka Johnny Appleseed's birthday.

Friday, September 26th is “PlayDate” at the Children's Museum of Phoenix, but this event is not for kids!.  It is a 21 and over fundraising event. The theme for September is “Costumes and Cocktails”.  It’s going to be a spooky, “Halloween” theme where guests are encouraged to come and dress up in their favorite costume and play like a kid again.  All exhibits will be open along with themed games and activities, a DJ and dance floor, Photobooth, food trucks, cash bar and more!

Saturday, September 27th, 2014 is Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day Live!  We may not live close to a Smithsonian museum which has free admission everyday, but once a year they celebrate and give out free tickets to local museums or venues.  Some local museums that you can get free tickets for include the Arizona Museum of Natural History, Pueblo Grand Museum, Boyce Thompson Arboretum...and many more.  For a museum near your click here.  To sign up for your two free tickets, click here.

Saturday, September 27th, 2014:  MCC Homecoming.  Come out and enjoy a food truck rally and watch the Thunderbirds take on New Mexico Military.  The first 200 MCC students and alumni to show student ID or alumni card will receive up to two free meal vouchers to use at one of the food trucks.  Game starts at 7:00 PM and food truck rally starts at 6:30.  General admission is $5.  Seniors and 12+ are $3 and under 12 or students and alumni with proper ID are free.  I just requested my alumni card today.  Click here to request yours.  Plus, I'm really excited to see my little cousin (who isn't so little anymore) play for MCC.  Go Sam!

Saturday, September 27th, 2014: Chile Pepper Fest. This festival held on Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix highlights tasty dishes and drinks that showcase the chile pepper. Admission is free (w/ online reservation) and tickets for tastings are $2 each, but you can save by buying tickets in multiples.
